Movement is a blockchain network built around the Move programming language and the Move Virtual Machine (MoveVM). Its official documentation describes the production network as M1, "a native Layer 1 blockchain built specifically for the Move programming language and virtual machine," and states that, unlike sidechains or Layer 2 designs, M1 "operates as an independent blockchain with its own consensus mechanism and validator set."
MOVE is the native asset. It pays gas on the Movement Network, is staked to secure consensus, and is used in protocol governance. MOVE also exists as an ERC-20 representation on Ethereum, which is how most exchange trading and bridging happens.
In short: Movement is a Move-language chain in the same technical family as Aptos and Sui, and it has been through a difficult corporate history that anyone researching the asset should understand first.
Official sources:
Movement Labs was founded by Rushi Manche and Cooper Scanlon, who positioned the project as a way to bring Move-language execution into an Ethereum-connected environment. The Movement Network Foundation announced the launch of Movement Mainnet Beta and the MOVE token generation event on December 9, 2024. At that point the network was presented as a Move-based chain that settled to Ethereum rather than as a sovereign Layer 1.
The project was then damaged by a market-making dispute. An arrangement placed roughly 66 million MOVE, a large share of the early float, under the control of a third-party market maker, and those tokens were sold aggressively after listing. An internal investigation followed, Manche was terminated as chief executive, and major exchanges including Binance and Coinbase suspended MOVE trading. The Foundation later repurchased a portion of investor-allocated tokens to repair the token's distribution and the project's credibility.
Core research and development then moved to a separate company, Move Industries, led by Torab Torabi. In July 2026, Movement Labs, the original operating entity, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection under Subchapter V in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. Move Industries was a distinct legal entity and was not part of that filing, and the network continued to operate. Treat the governance and funding picture as still evolving and check the Foundation's own communications for the current position.
Movement's documented architecture is organized into five layers.
API layer REST endpoints cover account, resource and transaction access, and GraphQL handles multi-resource queries. Nodes do not expose WebSocket streaming, so real-time applications poll RPC endpoints or use third-party indexers.
Execution layer The MoveVM executes Move bytecode natively, with gas metering across instruction, storage and payload costs, and Move's safety checks enforced at runtime. The transaction pipeline uses Block-STM for optimistic parallel execution, detecting read and write conflicts and re-executing conflicting transactions so that commits still land in deterministic order.
Storage layer An address-keyed account store holds Move resources directly, Merkle trees commit to global state, and an indexed transaction history supports verification.
Consensus layer A Byzantine fault tolerant proof-of-stake design with leader selection and a validator network, targeting fast deterministic finality rather than probabilistic settlement.
Network layer Peer-to-peer messaging, mempool management and message routing between nodes.
MOVE is used for:
Staked MOVE moves through four states: pending_active after deposit, active while earning, pending_inactive after an unlock request (which keeps earning until the lockup expires), and inactive once withdrawable. Delegation pools track ownership in shares whose price rises as rewards accrue, and operator commission is deducted before the operator buys shares at the post-appreciation price, so an operator cannot capture appreciation on rewards it did not earn.
Compared with Aptos and Sui, the other prominent Move networks, Movement is smaller and younger, and its documentation frames M1 as a sovereign chain rather than an adaptation of an existing Move network. Compared with EVM rollups, it does not inherit Ethereum settlement, so security rests on its own validator set rather than on fraud or validity proofs. Compared with Solana, Move's parallelism is inferred at runtime instead of being declared up front by each transaction.
The more consequential difference is not technical. Aptos, Sui and the major Layer 2s have not had a founding company enter bankruptcy, and that gap in institutional stability matters more to most readers than any throughput comparison.
Security depends on the size and independence of the validator set, the quality of the BFT consensus implementation, and the correctness of the MoveVM and its gas metering. Move's type system and resource abilities eliminate some contract-level failures at compile time, but they do nothing about economic design errors or stake concentration. Bridged assets carry separate risk: the canonical bridge relies on LayerZero messaging and OFT adapter contracts, with documented daily bridging limits and multi-day withdrawal waiting periods for some assets.
Movement matters mainly as a test of whether the Move ecosystem can support more than a couple of networks, and as a case study in how a token distribution failure damages a project long after the engineering is sound. The technology is real and documented in public. Whether the surrounding organization can rebuild credibility is a separate and still open question, and an honest assessment has to hold both facts at once.
MOVE trades on centralized exchanges, mostly as the Ethereum ERC-20 representation, and on decentralized venues on both Movement and Ethereum. Listings and pairs have changed materially over the project's history and vary by jurisdiction, so confirm availability on the venue itself.
MOVE has been listed on venues including:
Because MOVE has been suspended and relisted at different points, check the current status on the exchange before trading.
Movement's bridge documentation lists contract addresses for both representations. Confirm the network and address before any deposit or withdrawal, since the same ticker exists in more than one form.
