Ontology is a public blockchain that positions itself as a trust layer for Web3, with decentralized identity and verifiable data as its focus rather than general purpose finance alone. It runs its own layer 1 chain, supports multiple virtual machines including EVM, NeoVM and WebAssembly, and uses a two token model in which ONT is the staking and governance asset while ONG is the gas asset. Its best known component is ONT ID, a decentralized identity framework built on the W3C decentralized identifier and verifiable credential specifications. The Ontology MainNet, branded Ontology 1.0, went live on 30 June 2018.

Ontology was founded by Li Jun, also described as co-founder and chief architect of blockchain solutions at OnChain, a Chinese blockchain technology company. The project was developed from 2017 with technical support from OnChain, whose principals Da Hongfei and Erik Zhang are also associated with the NEO blockchain. A later upgrade at block height 13,920,000 added EVM compatibility and changed token decimals.
Consensus is provided by VBFT, described in the documentation as the core algorithm of the Ontology Consensus Engine. It is a hybrid combining proof of stake, a verifiable random function and Byzantine fault tolerance. Block production is carried out by Triones nodes, which apply to become consensus nodes and must then be voted in through user staking of ONT.
ONT is the staking and governance asset. Holders stake ONT to vote Triones nodes into the consensus set, and staking generates ONG rewards, which links network security to the gas economy. ONT is not itself spent on fees. ONG is the gas token, consumed by every transaction and smart contract execution including Ontology EVM contracts. ONT supply is fixed at one billion units.
Ontology treats identity as a first class part of the base layer rather than an application built on top. ONT ID, verifiable credentials and OScore are protocol adjacent frameworks with cross chain deployments, aimed at letting an application verify a claim about a user without collecting the underlying data.
Against Neo, Ontology shares the two token model and NeoVM heritage but pushed further into identity and credentialing and added EVM and WebAssembly execution. Against general purpose EVM chains, its edge is the identity stack rather than throughput or DeFi depth. VeChain also targets enterprises but centers supply chain and product data, while Ontology centers self sovereign identity. Against Tezos or aelf, the technical distinction is VBFT with verifiable random function selection.
Security rests on VBFT and on the economic weight of staked ONT behind Triones nodes. The consensus code is open source in the ontio/ontology repository, and the chain has operated continuously since 2018.
Ontology competes in the most crowded category in crypto, and its developer and application activity is far below the leading chains. Decentralized identity has been a slow moving commercial category, and adoption of ONT ID outside the project's own ecosystem is hard to verify from public sources. The two token model adds a second asset users must acquire, which is a usability cost. The consensus set is permissioned by stake weighted voting, so decentralization depends on how widely stake is distributed.
Ontology is one of the longer running attempts to make verifiable identity a native blockchain capability rather than an application feature, and it took a standards based rather than proprietary route.
ONT has been listed on major centralized exchanges since 2018, generally in stablecoin pairs, and liquidity is concentrated on those venues rather than on-chain markets. Because Ontology now supports EVM, ONT and ONG also appear on some decentralized exchanges. Confirm which network a listing refers to before withdrawing.
ONT can be held in ONTO, the project's self custodial wallet, which also handles ONT ID registration and ONG claiming. Hardware wallets from major vendors have supported Ontology, and EVM compatible wallets can be pointed at the Ontology EVM network. Keep a small ONG balance for fees, since ONT cannot pay gas.
