Midnight is a privacy focused blockchain that uses zero knowledge proofs so applications can prove a computation was carried out correctly without publishing the underlying data. It was incubated inside the Cardano ecosystem by Input Output Global and is commonly described as a Cardano partner chain. It uses two tokens: NIGHT is the tradable utility and governance asset, and DUST is a non tradable shielded resource that pays for transactions and is generated by holding NIGHT.

Midnight originated at Input Output Global, the engineering company behind much of Cardano, and was presented publicly by Charles Hoskinson and the IOG team in 2022 and 2023. It is now stewarded by the Midnight Foundation and Shielded Technologies. NIGHT launched as a Cardano native asset in December 2025, distributed through a broad claim process called the Glacier Drop with a follow up Scavenger Mine phase. A federated mainnet went live in March 2026 with a named institutional validator set.
Midnight separates public state from shielded state. Contract logic is written in a language called Compact, which the toolchain compiles into zero knowledge circuits. A user runs part of the computation locally, produces a proof that the rules were followed, and submits it on chain, so validators check the proof rather than the private inputs. Developers choose per application which fields are public and which are shielded, an approach the project calls programmable privacy. Fees are paid in DUST, generated continuously by wallets holding NIGHT and decaying over time, so it behaves like an accruing allowance of capacity rather than a purchased asset.
The main pieces are the Midnight ledger and its validator set, the Compact language and compiler, the proving system and local proof server, the midnight-js developer libraries, the bridge intended to move NIGHT from Cardano onto Midnight, and Midnight Foundation governance.
NIGHT generates DUST, which is what actually pays for transactions and contract execution. It carries governance weight and, under the published design, is expected to feature in staking as the network decentralises. NIGHT itself is unshielded, so its balances and transfers are visible even though activity inside shielded contracts is not.
Two things. Holders generate DUST rather than buying gas, giving predictable transaction costs. And privacy is selective rather than total: an application can prove a regulatory or business fact, such as that a check was passed or a balance exceeds a threshold, without exposing the record.
Monero and Zcash are primarily private money. Midnight is a general purpose contract platform where privacy is configured per field. Secret Network also targets confidential contracts but relies on trusted execution environments, whereas Midnight rests on user generated proofs. Unlike a zero knowledge rollup, Midnight uses proofs for confidentiality rather than compression.
Stated targets include identity and credential checks that reveal only a yes or no answer, regulated financial workflows where counterparties prove compliance without publishing client data, private voting, and confidential supply chain and enterprise records.
Correctness of shielded computation is enforced cryptographically, so an invalid state transition cannot be accepted even though the data is never revealed. Network security comes from the validator set, which at the federated stage is a defined group of institutional operators, a bootstrapping choice and centralisation trade off the project intends to open up. NIGHT held on Cardano inherits Cardano's security until bridged.
Midnight is early. The federated validator set means block production is not yet permissionless, and the Cardano to Midnight bridge is a new, security sensitive component. A large share of NIGHT was distributed through a claim process with a redemption window running into late 2026, creating a persistent stream of newly claimable supply. Zero knowledge systems depend on correct circuit implementation. Privacy technology carries regulatory uncertainty, and developer adoption of a new language is not guaranteed.
Midnight is a serious attempt to make confidentiality a configurable property of ordinary applications rather than an all or nothing choice. If selective disclosure works in practice it addresses a real obstacle to regulated use of public blockchains, and it is a significant test of Cardano's partner chain strategy.
NIGHT trades on a range of centralised exchanges that listed it after the December 2025 launch, and can be traded as a Cardano native asset on Cardano decentralised exchanges. Listings differ by region.
