Bio Protocol is a funding and liquidity layer for decentralized science, built so that communities of patients, researchers and crypto users can collectively fund biotech projects and share in the intellectual property they produce. Kohlhaas is widely reported as the founder of both Molecule and Bio Protocol, with Tyler Golato reported as a co-founder of Molecule, VitaDAO and Bio; those attributions come from interviews and press coverage rather than protocol documentation.
The lineage runs through Molecule AG, which pioneered the IP tokenization framework Bio uses, and through VitaDAO, the longevity research DAO launched in 2021 that became the template for later BioDAOs. Bio Protocol itself emerged as the shared layer beneath those communities. BIO is also "the primary pair asset for all project tokens, creating deep liquidity pools," and holders "receive discounts on products and services offered by projects."

Bio's documentation maintains a security section pointing to audits and security resources for its contracts, though the material reviewed does not name the audit firms. Biotech research fails often, and most early-stage programs never reach commercialization, so the underlying assets carry very high base-rate risk on multi-year timelines. IP Tokens confer governance and information rights, not a contractual claim on revenue, which is a distinction easy to miss. Bio's own documentation does not name core team members, and governance concentration through veBIO staking is worth monitoring. Early-stage biotech funding is narrow, slow and dominated by a small number of gatekeepers, and a great deal of university research never leaves the tech transfer office.
