Aztec is a privacy-focused Layer 2 network on Ethereum. It lets applications keep balances, user data and parts of their own logic confidential while still settling proofs of correctness to Ethereum. Unlike most rollups, Aztec is deliberately not EVM equivalent: it introduces its own privacy-preserving virtual machine, so contracts are written for Aztec rather than copied over from Ethereum unchanged.
The organizing idea is programmable privacy rather than all-or-nothing anonymity. A contract declares some functions private, so they execute and are proven on the user's own device, and others public, so they run transparently in the Aztec Virtual Machine. AZTEC is the network's base asset; bridged into the Layer 2 it becomes Fee Juice, the unit used to pay for execution.

Aztec was started in 2017 by Zac Williamson, Tom Walton-Pocock, Joe Andrews and Arnaud Schenk. Williamson, who came from experimental particle physics work at CERN and T2K, co-authored the PLONK proving system in 2019 with Ariel Gabizon and Oana Ciobotaru. PLONK removed the need for a fresh trusted setup per application and became the basis for an entire family of "PLONKish" systems used well beyond Aztec itself. The same team later created Noir, a Rust-like language for writing zero-knowledge circuits.
The project's early products were consumer-facing: zk.money, a shielded pool, and Aztec Connect, a bridge that let users interact with Ethereum DeFi from behind that shield. Both were wound down in 2023. The founders stated publicly that the deciding factor was commercial and operational rather than regulatory, since the service ran on a single node that consumed a large share of engineering attention. Aztec then refocused on a general-purpose encrypted network, raising a $100 million Series B led by a16z in December 2022.
A public testnet followed in 2025, an alpha network began producing blocks against Ethereum mainnet in November 2025, and a community token sale ran that December using Uniswap's Contract Clearing Auction on v4, distributing roughly 14.95 percent of the supply and raising on the order of $59 million to $61 million in ETH across about 17,000 bidders. AZTEC transfers were enabled on February 12, 2026.
Private execution on the client Private functions run locally, in what the documentation describes as a private execution environment inside the wallet or browser. The device produces a proof that the function ran correctly, and sensitive inputs never leave the machine.

Privacy here is the execution model, not an add-on. Most privacy tooling in crypto is a shielded pool bolted onto a transparent chain, so anything expressive still has to happen in the clear. Aztec instead asks developers to declare, per function, what is private and what is public, and proves the private half on the user's own hardware so the network never sees the inputs. The tradeoff is real: it required abandoning EVM equivalence and building a new virtual machine, language and proving stack.
General-purpose zk rollups such as ZKsync, Scroll or Starknet use zero-knowledge proofs mainly for compression and throughput; Aztec uses them mainly for confidentiality. Privacy Layer 1s like Zcash and Monero focus on shielded payments and run independent chains, while Aztec targets programmable applications and inherits Ethereum settlement. Aleo is the nearest match in intent, also a privacy-first programmable network with client-side proving, but it is its own Layer 1 rather than a rollup anchored to Ethereum.
Security rests on the correctness of the proving system and its circuits, the honesty and liveness of the sequencer and prover set backed by staked AZTEC, the L1 verifier and portal contracts, and Ethereum's own consensus as the settlement anchor. Because private execution happens on user devices, key hygiene matters more here than on a transparent chain: losing a note's decryption key can mean losing access to funds no one else can even see.
Aztec matters less as another rollup than as the team that shipped much of the cryptography the rest of the field now uses. Whether or not this Layer 2 becomes a dominant venue, its underlying bet, that public blockchains cannot serve serious financial or personal use cases while every balance is world-readable, is one of the more consequential open questions in the space.
AZTEC trades on centralized exchanges and, as an ERC-20 token, on Ethereum decentralized exchanges. Privacy-adjacent assets are more likely than most to be restricted in specific markets, so confirm availability on the venue's own market list.
