Stacks is a smart contract layer that settles to Bitcoin. It runs its own blocks and virtual machine but anchors state to the Bitcoin chain, so Stacks history inherits Bitcoin's settlement guarantees. Contracts are written in Clarity, a deliberately restricted language that can read Bitcoin state directly. STX pays transaction fees and is locked in Stacking, the consensus process that pays participants in Bitcoin.
Official resources:
The project traces to work begun in 2013 by Muneeb Ali and Ryan Shea under the name Blockstack, growing out of Ali's doctoral research on a Bitcoin anchored internet. In 2019 Blockstack completed a token offering qualified by the US Securities and Exchange Commission under Regulation A+, an unusual route at the time, and the network later rebranded to Stacks. The Nakamoto upgrade activated on 29 October 2024, cutting block times and tightening Bitcoin finality, and sBTC launched in December 2024.
Consensus uses Proof of Transfer. Miners compete by sending BTC on the Bitcoin chain rather than by burning electricity directly, and the winning bid earns the right to produce Stacks blocks and receive newly issued STX. That committed BTC is forwarded to Stacking participants, who lock STX and run or delegate to signers, so stackers earn Bitcoin rather than inflationary rewards.
The Nakamoto design added a signer set that must approve blocks and anchors them so that reversing Stacks history would require reversing Bitcoin. Clarity is interpreted rather than compiled, has no unbounded loops and publishes source on chain, keeping contract behaviour predictable.
STX pays transaction fees and contract execution costs. It is also the asset locked in Stacking, where holders commit STX for a set number of reward cycles, directly or through a delegation pool, and receive BTC distributions in return. Because rewards are paid in Bitcoin, the system is commonly described as self custodial Bitcoin yield sourced from miner bids. Minimum lock amounts and cycle mechanics have changed across protocol versions, so check current documentation first.
Stacks does not wrap Bitcoin on a foreign chain or rely on a separate validator set for its security narrative. Its consensus consumes real BTC, its history anchors to Bitcoin blocks, and its contract language reads Bitcoin state without an oracle. That combination is rare among networks claiming a Bitcoin relationship.
Many Bitcoin adjacent chains are EVM sidechains secured by their own validators or a federation, with BTC bridged in. Stacks instead built a purpose designed language and a consensus that pays out in BTC. The trade off is a smaller developer pool, since Clarity is not Solidity.
Stacks blocks are anchored to Bitcoin, so rewriting settled Stacks history would require rewriting Bitcoin history, and after Nakamoto a signer set must approve blocks. Clarity's restricted design removes several classes of contract bug by construction. sBTC introduces a separate trust surface, since it depends on the signers that custody deposits, and is not equivalent to holding BTC.
sBTC security depends on the honesty and liveness of its signers, a weaker assumption than native Bitcoin custody. Stacking returns depend on miner BTC commitments and vary between cycles, and locked STX cannot be sold during a lock. Clarity's smaller ecosystem means fewer libraries, auditors and developers, and Bitcoin layer competition is intense.
Bitcoin has the largest settlement assurance in the industry and little native programmability. Stacks is one of the longest running attempts to close that gap without moving BTC to an unrelated chain, and Proof of Transfer is a distinct answer to how a Bitcoin layer gets paid for.
STX is listed on many major centralised exchanges and on decentralised venues within the Stacks ecosystem. Some exchanges run Stacking on behalf of customers, which changes the custody and reward arrangement, so read the terms first. Availability varies by jurisdiction.
STX needs a wallet that supports the Stacks chain. Leather and Xverse are the common options and both support Stacking and hardware wallet pairing, so a Ledger device connected through one of them keeps keys offline. Sending STX to a Bitcoin address will not be recoverable, so confirm the address format first.
