Walrus is a decentralized blob storage protocol built by Mysten Labs, the team behind Sui, using Sui as its control plane. It stores large binary objects, called blobs, across a committee of storage nodes using a two-dimensional erasure code named Red Stuff, which the whitepaper says achieves high security "with only 4.5x replication factor" while letting a node repair lost data with bandwidth proportional to the loss. WAL pays for storage and is staked with nodes, and stake sets how many shards a node holds. Mainnet launched on 27 March 2025.

Walrus was designed and built by Mysten Labs, the company that created Sui. The whitepaper, version 2.0 dated 11 April 2025, is credited to "The MystenLabs Team" rather than named individuals, and the protocol is now stewarded by the Walrus Foundation. The stated motivation is that state machine replication forces every validator to store everything, producing replication factors "ranging from 100 to 1000," which is wasteful for blobs you only store and retrieve. Around the launch, press including CoinDesk reported a $140 million token sale led by Standard Crypto.
A blob is encoded into slivers and distributed to the storage committee. The client collects signed acknowledgements from a quorum, described in the whitepaper as 2f+1 of the nodes, forming a write certificate published on Sui. That event is the Point of Availability, when nodes become obligated to keep the data readable for the epochs paid for. Walrus runs in epochs, each with a committee of n = 3f+1 nodes controlling shards and tolerating up to f Byzantine nodes. Mainnet uses 1000 shards with two-week epochs, storage is bought for up to 53 epochs at a time, and nodes are challenged near each epoch's end to prove they still hold their data.
WAL pays for storage, priced per epoch and settled through the Sui contracts, and it is staked. The whitepaper is direct that "staking of WAL tokens, by or on behalf of storage nodes, underpins Walrus's security," with rewards for honoring commitments and slashing for failing them. Delegation is built in, and stake also allocates shards. Governance is narrow: WAL stake votes on penalty levels and pricing. SUI, not WAL, pays gas.
The replication factor is the headline. Storing at roughly 4.5x rather than replicating across a whole validator set makes large blobs economical, and cheap repair matters as much, because a system that cannot heal degrades whenever a node leaves. Leasing Sui's consensus also makes blobs programmable from Move contracts.
Filecoin uses proof-of-replication and proof-of-spacetime with a deal market and its own chain, with different repair economics. Arweave sells permanent storage financed by an endowment, whereas Walrus sells storage for a bounded number of epochs. Storj is a federated commercial network rather than a stake-elected committee.
Sui provides consensus and ordering for control operations. The committee tolerates up to f Byzantine nodes out of 3f+1, with availability certified by 2f+1 signatures. Economic security comes from staked WAL, slashed when nodes fail challenges or fail to hand over shards, with the proceeds going to nodes that carried out recovery.
All blobs are public, so private data needs an encryption layer such as Seal before it is written. Storage is not permanent: it is bought for a bounded number of epochs and must be renewed. A Sui outage is a Walrus outage, and delegated stakers face slashing through their node. Mainnet offers no public unauthenticated publisher, so production writes need your own publisher, a relay, or SDK integration.
Blockchains are good at small pieces of state and bad at large files, a gap papered over for years by centralized hosting behind on-chain pointers. Walrus attempts to close it on an efficiency argument, and its Sui coupling lets contracts reference and gate stored data.
WAL trades on many centralized exchanges and on decentralized venues in the Sui ecosystem, where it is a native coin type, not a bridged asset. Because SUI pays gas for Walrus operations, holders who intend to stake or store data need both.
WAL is held in Sui wallets such as Slush, Suiet and Nightly, which also interact with Walrus staking, and Ledger supports Sui for cold storage. Staked WAL is a self-custodied Sui object held by your own wallet, not by the protocol, so it must be preserved and returned to the contracts when you unstake.
