What Is Sei (SEI)?

Sei is a layer 1 blockchain built for trading and other latency sensitive applications. It launched in August 2023 as a Cosmos SDK chain with an optimised Tendermint consensus, then added an Ethereum Virtual Machine environment so Solidity contracts could run alongside the original CosmWasm one. It is commonly described as the first parallelised EVM chain, meaning independent transactions in a block execute simultaneously. SEI is the native asset, used for gas, staking and governance.

Who Founded Sei? (History)

Sei Labs was founded in 2022 by Jeff Feng and Jayendra Jog, previously of Goldman Sachs and Robinhood. The mainnet, Pacific-1, went live on 15 August 2023. Sei v2, delivered in 2024, added the EVM environment and parallel processing to what had been a Cosmos only chain. In 2026 the project published a further redesign called Giga and moved to consolidate onto an EVM only stack, retiring the legacy Cosmos modules.

How Sei Works

The version running today pairs Twin Turbo consensus, an optimised Tendermint variant that separates block propagation from voting to shorten finality, with optimistic parallel execution. Transactions execute concurrently and only those that conflict on shared state are re executed, so the result matches serial execution. State is stored in SeiDB.

Sei Giga is the announced replacement. It moves from a single block proposer to a multi proposer design in which each validator streams its own batches continuously, with consensus periodically committing a snapshot across all lanes. Ordering finalises first and execution follows asynchronously, while state commitment moves from a Merkle tree on the hot path to a flat key value store.

Key Ecosystem Components

The main components are the Sei node software with Twin Turbo consensus and SeiDB, the EVM environment with standard Ethereum tooling and RPC, the Giga stack comprising the Autobahn consensus protocol, the Ares execution client and the Eidos state layer, and a private mempool intended to limit value extraction.

SEI Token Utility

SEI pays gas fees for transactions and contract execution, and is staked with validators to secure the network, with delegators sharing rewards. Staked SEI carries governance weight over upgrades and parameters, which has mattered in practice because the network's architectural changes went through governance.

What Makes Sei Unique?

Sei optimises for exchange style workloads rather than general computation, and has rebuilt its architecture twice to do so. Trading features such as fast finality, parallel execution and mempool handling that reduces front running sit at the protocol level, not the application level. The 2026 decision to go EVM only is also unusual, since most chains add execution environments rather than remove them.

How Sei Differs from Similar Projects

Monad is the closest comparison, since both target a parallelised, high throughput EVM layer 1. Monad started from a clean EVM focused design, while Sei converted an existing Cosmos chain, which brings a live network and legacy migration work. Solana achieves parallelism through a runtime Ethereum contracts cannot use directly, and Sui and Aptos use Move, so they are not EVM compatible. Injective is also Cosmos based and trading focused but leans on a built in order book.

Use Cases of Sei

The design targets on-chain order books and perpetual futures, high frequency trading, market making, payments, and consumer applications where confirmation latency is visible to the user. It also serves as a general EVM deployment target for protocols wanting low fees.

How Sei Is Secured

Sei is a proof of stake network secured by validators bonding SEI, with delegation letting holders participate without running infrastructure. Safety depends on honest control of a supermajority of stake and on how widely it is spread. The transition to Giga adds operational risk, since it replaces consensus, execution and state layers on a live network.

Risks and Considerations

Sei has changed its architecture twice in three years, which shows responsiveness but also means the platform developers build on has not been stable for long. Removing the CosmWasm environment affects teams that built there and requires migration. Giga's headline performance figures come from devnet and testnet conditions, not throughput under adversarial load. Competition in this category is intense, a large portion of SEI supply vests over years, and early activity on fast chains is often incentive driven.

Why Sei Matters

Sei is one of the more instructive projects to watch on what a blockchain optimised for trading actually requires. Rather than treating performance as a marketing number, it has repeatedly replaced the components that limited it and published its reasoning, and the multi proposer redesign is an ambitious change on a live network.
