Open Campus is a decentralized education protocol and DAO that builds financial and credentialing infrastructure for learning. EDU is its native token, and it does two jobs: it is the gas token of EDU Chain, the network Open Campus operates, and it is the governance token of the Open Campus DAO.
The practical idea is that education content, credentials, and payments can be represented on chain so that creators keep verifiable ownership of what they publish, learners keep portable records of what they have completed, and institutions can plug into shared rails rather than building isolated systems. Open Campus groups the financial side of this under the label EduFi, meaning on-chain education finance such as lending against future earnings, scholarship funding, and revenue sharing on content.
Note on identity: the EDU ticker has been used by more than one unrelated project over the years, and Open Campus is sometimes indexed under the identifier "edu-coin". This page describes the Open Campus protocol whose token contracts are deployed on Ethereum, BNB Chain, and Arbitrum One.
Official sources:
Open Campus is deliberately structured as a DAO rather than a single company, and no individual is presented as a sole founder. Its core contributors are named organizations: Animoca Brands, the education app company TinyTap, NewCampus, RiseIn, and HackQuest. Yat Siu of Animoca Brands has been the most publicly visible backer of the initiative.
EDU was distributed through a Binance Launchpad subscription in April 2023, which was that platform's thirty-first launchpad project. The protocol initially focused on Publisher NFTs and content revenue sharing on existing chains.
The larger architectural step came later. EDU Chain launched its mainnet on 17 January 2025 as a Layer 3 rollup built with the Arbitrum Orbit stack, following a testnet phase that the team reported had processed tens of millions of transactions. In November 2025, Open Campus and Animoca Brands announced a partnership with the Nasdaq-listed company ANPA around a corporate EDU token strategy aimed at pushing EduFi into institutional channels.
EDU Chain sits three layers deep. It is an Arbitrum Orbit rollup that settles to Arbitrum One, which is itself a Layer 2 rollup that settles to Ethereum. The point of that arrangement is inheritance: EDU Chain gets execution that is cheap and fast enough for consumer education apps while anchoring its data and dispute resolution to Ethereum through Arbitrum.
EDU is the gas token on that chain, which runs under chain ID 41923, so demand for block space is denominated in the protocol's own asset rather than in ETH. Because EDU also exists as a standard token on Ethereum, BNB Chain, and Arbitrum One, moving it between environments relies on bridging infrastructure, including LayerZero's omnichain token standard and Arbitrum's own bridge contracts.
The content layer works through Publisher NFTs. A creator mints a piece of educational content as a Publisher NFT encoding ownership plus publishing and promotional rights, and co-publishers can acquire those NFTs and take on marketing or localizing the content for their own communities. When a learner pays EDU to access the content, the payment is split programmatically between the original creator, the co-publishers, and the protocol.
The identity layer is Open Campus ID, usually shortened to OCID. It gives a learner a persistent on-chain identity holding credentials and learning records, and the OCID Connect SDK lets third-party education applications authenticate against it instead of building their own account systems.
EDU has a fixed supply cap of one billion tokens. Its documented uses are:
Allocation and release schedules are published in the project's own token documentation, and unlock timing is a meaningful factor for anyone assessing the asset.
Most blockchain education projects are applications. Open Campus is unusual in having gone all the way down the stack to operate its own network with its token as the gas asset, which ties chain usage directly to the token rather than leaving the token as a governance accessory.
The Publisher NFT model is the second differentiator. Rather than treating an NFT as a collectible, it uses one as a programmable rights and revenue-splitting instrument, with co-publishers acting as a distributed localization and marketing layer. That is a genuine attempt to solve a real problem in education publishing, where reaching students in another language or country normally requires a traditional licensing deal.
Compared with general purpose Layer 2s such as Arbitrum or Optimism, EDU Chain is vertical rather than horizontal. It is not competing to host every category of application; it optimizes for education apps, credentials, and education finance, and it accepts a smaller addressable market in exchange for a clearer identity.
EDU Chain's security is inherited rather than standalone. As an Arbitrum Orbit rollup it posts data and relies on the fraud-proof and settlement machinery of Arbitrum One, which in turn settles to Ethereum. That gives it a far stronger security floor than an independent chain with its own small validator set could achieve, and it also means EDU Chain's guarantees are bounded by the guarantees of the layers below it.
Open Campus is one of the more coherent attempts to apply blockchain infrastructure to a real non-financial industry. Verifiable credentials, portable learning records, and automated revenue splits for educational content are problems that predate crypto and that existing systems handle badly. Whether or not EduFi becomes a large category, the project has produced working infrastructure, a live Layer 3, and named institutional contributors, which puts it ahead of most thematic tokens that never leave the pitch deck stage.
EDU is listed on a range of centralized exchanges and is also tradable on decentralized exchanges across the networks where its contracts are deployed. Supported pairs, deposit networks, and regional availability differ by venue, so verify which chain a given exchange uses for EDU deposits before transferring.
EDU has commonly been available on:
Listings and pairs change over time, so confirm current support on the exchange itself.
EDU can be left with an exchange in custodial form, or withdrawn to a self-custody EVM wallet such as MetaMask, Rabby, or a hardware wallet used through a compatible interface. Because EDU exists on Ethereum, BNB Chain, and Arbitrum One, and is bridged onto EDU Chain, the network you select at withdrawal determines where the tokens land.
