Linea is an Ethereum Layer 2 network that uses zero-knowledge validity proofs to settle transactions back to Ethereum. Its documentation classifies it as an EVM-equivalent Type 2 zkEVM, which means contracts compiled for Ethereum mainnet run on Linea without modification, and it uses lattice-based zk-SNARKs as its proof system. The network was built by Consensys, the company behind MetaMask and Infura, and is now governed by the Linea Association, a Swiss non-profit. LINEA is the network's token, but it is not the gas token and does not carry governance rights.
Official resources:
Linea was developed inside Consensys, the Ethereum software company founded by Joseph Lubin. It was announced as a zkEVM rollup and opened to the public as a mainnet alpha in the summer of 2023, timed around the EthCC conference. Development leaned heavily on Consensys' existing Ethereum client and tooling work, which is why the execution client is a Linea build of Besu.
Governance was moved out of the company in stages. The Linea Association, an independent Swiss non-profit, was established in late 2024 to steward the network and manage token distribution, working alongside an ecosystem council whose members include Consensys, ENS, Status, Eigen Labs and Sharplink. The LINEA token generation event followed on 10 September 2025, distributed by the Association rather than the company.
Transactions arrive at Linea's RPC endpoints and are ordered by a sequencer, which produces L2 blocks. A tracer records the execution traces needed for proving. A coordinator groups blocks into batches through a process the docs call conflation, then drives proof generation. The prover produces a validity proof that a verifier contract on Ethereum can check without replaying any of the underlying transactions. A state manager tracks and proves the Ethereum-compatible state. Once the proof and the data needed for availability and state recovery are posted and verified on Ethereum, the batch is finalized.
This produces two levels of assurance. Transactions reach soft finality quickly on L2, which is what applications and users normally experience, and hard finality only once the batch is finalized on Ethereum L1. Node infrastructure pairs a consensus client called Maru with a Linea Besu execution client. The public network runs at chain ID 59144, with Linea Sepolia at 59141.
The underlying stack is open source and is now called Lineth. It is a configurable rollup stack that other operators can deploy to run their own Ethereum-compatible L2 or L3 networks, including validium configurations where data availability is handled off Ethereum. Linea Mainnet is one particular configuration of that stack.
LINEA's role is deliberately narrow, and the documentation is explicit about what it is not. Gas on Linea is paid in ETH, not LINEA, and the token confers no governance rights. Its function is economic alignment through supply mechanics and ecosystem funding.
The genesis supply was set at 72,009,990,000 LINEA, described as one thousand times Ethereum's genesis supply. Eighty five percent was allocated to the community and ecosystem and fifteen percent to Consensys under a five year lock, with no allocation to private investors, insiders or employees. The ecosystem fund unlocks over roughly a decade with early releases weighted toward adoption.
The network also runs a dual burn. After infrastructure costs are covered, surplus revenue is split so that twenty percent is burned as ETH and eighty percent is used to acquire LINEA that is then bridged to Ethereum and burned. Both burns scale with network activity, so they are a function of usage rather than a fixed schedule.
Two things stand out. First, the design orients value toward ETH rather than away from it: gas stays denominated in ETH, part of the surplus burns ETH at the protocol level, and bridged ETH is put to work through staking. That is an unusual stance among Layer 2 networks, which more commonly introduce their own gas token. Second, the token distribution deliberately excluded private investors and employees, an approach few large rollups have taken.
Compared with optimistic rollups such as Arbitrum and Optimism, Linea proves correctness with validity proofs instead of relying on a fraud-proof challenge window, which changes the withdrawal and finality model. Compared with other zk rollups, the distinction is mostly equivalence and tooling. Linea targets Type 2 EVM equivalence so existing bytecode and developer tools work unchanged, whereas Starknet runs a different virtual machine and language. ZKsync and Scroll are closer technical peers. Against them, Linea's differences are governance by a Swiss association with an Ethereum-steward council, the ETH-denominated fee and burn design, and its origin inside the company that also builds MetaMask and Infura.
Correctness is enforced cryptographically. Every batch of L2 blocks is accompanied by a zk-SNARK that a contract on Ethereum verifies, so an invalid state transition cannot be finalized even if network operators misbehave. Data needed for availability and state reconstruction is published to the finalization layer, which is what allows users to recover the L2 state independently. Ethereum provides the settlement guarantee, so Linea inherits Ethereum's security for anything that has reached hard finality.
The live network still has centralized components. Sequencing, proving and coordination are operated rather than permissionless, which is normal for rollups at this stage but means liveness and transaction ordering depend on the operator. Forced transactions are the documented answer to censorship risk, and they are not yet enabled.
The sequencer and prover are operated centrally, so a failure or a decision to censor cannot currently be routed around by users, and the L1 fallback path is still in development. Decentralizing these roles is a stated direction, not a completed one.
LINEA has no governance rights and is not required to use the network, so its economic case depends almost entirely on burn flow, which in turn depends on sustained transaction revenue exceeding infrastructure costs. If activity falls, so does the burn. Yield Boost adds staking and liquidity considerations to the bridge itself: withdrawals draw on a liquid reserve, and if that reserve is short, users may need to wait on Ethereum's validator withdrawal queue or take an LST withdrawal instead. The project publishes its own risk disclosures for this feature and they are worth reading. Layer 2 competition is intense, and a large ecosystem fund is a spending plan, not a guarantee of durable activity.
Linea is one of the clearest tests of whether a Layer 2 can grow without diverting value away from Ethereum. Keeping gas in ETH, burning ETH at the protocol level, and putting bridged ETH to productive use are all choices that make the rollup's success and Ethereum's economics move together rather than apart. It also matters as infrastructure: the Lineth stack is open source and available to operators who want an Ethereum-equivalent network under their own control.
LINEA is listed on many centralized exchanges, typically against stablecoins and ETH. On-chain, it trades on decentralized exchanges on both Ethereum and Linea, since the token is deployed at the same address on both networks. Because the token contract is published in the project's own documentation, check the address there before swapping, and be careful to select the right network when withdrawing from an exchange. Remember that you will need ETH on Linea to pay gas, since LINEA itself is not the gas token.
LINEA is a standard ERC-20 asset, so any Ethereum-compatible wallet works once the Linea network is added, which most wallets do automatically. MetaMask and other browser or mobile wallets are convenient for active use. For larger balances, a hardware wallet paired with a software interface keeps signing keys offline while still allowing bridging and DeFi activity. Self-custody with a securely stored recovery phrase gives you direct control; leaving tokens on an exchange does not.
