Helium is a decentralized wireless network built by ordinary people who deploy radio hardware and are paid in cryptocurrency for the coverage they provide. Rather than a carrier spending billions on towers, Helium coordinates independently owned Hotspots into two wireless networks: a global LoRaWAN network for low-power Internet of Things devices, and a cellular offload and Wi-Fi network for mobile connectivity. HNT is the native token that rewards those deployments and pays for network usage.
The design idea is often called DePIN, short for decentralized physical infrastructure. Helium's protocol logic and token accounting now run on Solana, and Hotspot owners earn HNT for providing verified coverage and for carrying device traffic.

Helium was co-founded in 2013 by Amir Haleem and Shawn Fanning, with Sean Carey also named among the founding group. Fanning is best known for creating Napster. The company was originally Helium Inc. and rebranded to Nova Labs in 2022 alongside a large Series D funding round.
HNT launched on July 29, 2019, with no pre-mine. The most consequential decisions came through community governance. HIP-70, approved in 2022, retired Helium's own Layer 1 blockchain, and on April 18, 2023 the network migrated to Solana, with Proof of Coverage and data transfer continuing through the transition. A second restructuring followed when HIP-138, approved in late 2024 and deployed in January 2025, ended emissions of the IOT and MOBILE subnetwork tokens and returned all network rewards to HNT.
Helium's economics rest on three interlocking mechanisms.
Proof of Coverage Hotspots continuously challenge and verify one another using radio signals. The protocol uses those interactions to build a picture of where coverage genuinely exists, and rewards Hotspots for the coverage they can prove rather than the coverage they claim. Ordinary hardware cannot convincingly fake being somewhere it is not.
Data Credits Devices do not pay for data in HNT. They pay in Data Credits, a non-transferable utility unit pegged to a fixed value of $0.00001 each. Data Credits can only be created by burning HNT, which ties network usage directly to token demand while giving buyers a stable, predictable price for connectivity.
Burn and mint equilibrium Because Data Credits are minted only by destroying HNT, real usage removes tokens from supply. A net emissions mechanism re-mints HNT that was burned for Data Credits, capped at 1,643.84 HNT per day, so ongoing rewards remain available without breaching the supply ceiling.
The network is made up of Hotspots, the community-owned gateways providing IoT or mobile coverage; the two subnetworks, one LoRaWAN and one for cellular offload and Wi-Fi; oracles that observe high-volume activity offchain and post attested results to Solana; the Helium Wallet and associated applications; the Helium Improvement Proposal process that governs protocol changes; and Helium Mobile, a consumer mobile service built by Nova Labs on top of the network. Nova Labs signed an agreement with T-Mobile to combine community-hosted coverage with carrier infrastructure for that service.
HNT does three things. It rewards the people who deploy and operate coverage, which is how the network bootstraps physical infrastructure without central capital expenditure. It is the sole source of Data Credits, since enterprises and developers burn HNT to obtain the credits that pay for data transfer. And it carries governance weight, with holders voting on Helium Improvement Proposals that change protocol rules and economics.
Supply is capped at approximately 223 million HNT, revised down from an original 240 million target because of first-year delays. Emissions follow a halving schedule that reduces issuance roughly every two years, so new HNT enters the system on a published schedule rather than by discretion.
Most crypto networks pay for computation, storage, or capital. Helium pays for physical radio coverage in specific geographic locations and verifies that coverage cryptographically rather than trusting a self-report. Proving a physical fact about the world and then pricing it is genuinely unusual.
The second distinctive element is the Data Credit design. By forcing usage to be paid in a fixed-value, non-transferable unit created only by burning HNT, Helium gives enterprises stable pricing while still linking demand to the token. Buyers of connectivity never have to hold a volatile asset to use the network.
Compared with data transport networks that pay for bandwidth and uptime, Helium's unit of work is location-specific radio coverage, far harder to relocate or fake but requiring real hardware and physical site access. Compared with traditional carriers, coverage grows wherever individuals see an economic reason to deploy, which produces dense urban coverage quickly and sparse rural coverage slowly. Compared with other blockchain projects, Helium notably chose to stop being a blockchain, retiring its own Layer 1 in favor of building as a set of programs on Solana.
Typical uses include connecting low-power IoT devices such as asset trackers, environmental sensors, utility meters, and agricultural monitors over LoRaWAN; providing cellular offload and Wi-Fi capacity that carriers can lease; powering consumer mobile plans through Helium Mobile; and giving hardware owners a way to earn from spare coverage capacity. Developers building connected products use Data Credits to budget data costs at a fixed rate rather than a floating one.
Since the 2023 migration, transaction ordering and settlement inherit Solana's Proof of Stake security. Above that, Helium runs its own integrity layer: Proof of Coverage validates that Hotspots are where and what they claim to be, and oracles process high-volume offchain activity and post attested summaries onchain, with supporting data published so third parties can check the work. Protocol economics can only change through the Helium Improvement Proposal process, which requires community voting, as the HIP-70 and HIP-138 decisions demonstrated in practice.
Hardware-based networks carry risks purely digital ones do not. Deployment economics depend on token value, so falling rewards can lead operators to unplug Hotspots and let coverage thin out. Coverage quality is uneven by nature, since it follows individual incentives rather than a coverage plan. Enterprise adoption of decentralized wireless is still developing, and the burn and mint model only tightens supply if real usage grows.
There is also regulatory exposure, because spectrum use, telecommunications licensing, and consumer mobile service are regulated activities that differ by country. Governance can change reward economics materially, as HIP-138 did when it removed two subnetwork tokens. And because the protocol now lives on Solana, congestion or an outage on that chain affects Helium too.
Helium is the most substantial working example of using token incentives to build physical infrastructure that would otherwise require enormous upfront capital. Whether or not decentralized wireless displaces any incumbent, the network demonstrated that thousands of strangers will deploy real hardware in real locations when the rewards and the verification are both credible. That template, prove a physical contribution and pay for it, is now the reference design for an entire category of projects.
