AUSD, the Agora Dollar, is a fiat-backed stablecoin designed to hold a one-to-one value with the US dollar. It is issued by Agora Bermuda Limited, which holds a Class F licence from the Bermuda Monetary Authority to issue, sell and redeem digital assets. Agora describes the reserve as fully backed by short-term US Treasuries, overnight repurchase agreements, and cash and liquid assets, with monthly third-party attestations. Agora also sells a stablecoin API for businesses to mint, move and redeem programmatically.
Official resources:
Agora publishes its founders directly: Nick van Eck is chief executive and co-founder, and Drake Evans is chief technology officer and co-founder. The company positions itself as stablecoin infrastructure for institutions rather than a retail brand. Public reserve reporting runs from mid-2024, with monthly management reports and monthly third-party attestations.
AUSD is a standard ERC-20 style token with compliance features built into the contract. Institutional clients mint by delivering dollars to Agora and redeem by returning tokens, and Agora states it charges no minting or redemption fees. Reserve assets back the outstanding supply, and the accounting firm Grant Thornton LLP publishes monthly attestation reports prepared under AICPA standards.
The token uses the same address, 0x00000000eFE302BEAA2b3e6e1b18d08D69a9012a, on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base, Immutable, Katana, Mantle, Monad and Polygon PoS, with a separate Solana mint at AUSD1jCcCyPLybk1YnvPWsHQSrZ46dxwoMniN4N2UEB9.
AUSD is a settlement and payment instrument, not a speculative asset. It moves dollars between counterparties and venues, holds balances on chain, and serves as a quote and collateral asset in DeFi. Agora also promotes an open reward model in which reserve economics are shared with distributors.
Two things stand out. First, revenue sharing: most issuers keep reserve income, while Agora markets sharing it with distributors, changing the incentive for exchanges, wallets and fintechs to integrate. Second, deployment at one consistent address across many EVM chains, which simplifies integration and reduces the chance of using the wrong contract.
USDC and Tether are far larger and more liquid, with deeper exchange support and retail recognition. PayPal USD and Global Dollar are newer entrants built around distribution partnerships. AUSD is narrower and explicitly institutional: a Bermuda-regulated issuer, an API-first product, whitelabel issuance, and reserve economics shared with distributors. It is not crypto-collateralised, so comparisons with designs holding on-chain collateral do not apply.
Two layers matter. On chain, the contract restricts minting and burning to authorised roles, supports freezing of assets used in criminal activity, and is upgradeable. Contracts are open source and audit reports are published in the documentation. Off chain, security means reserve quality and disclosure: short-duration Treasuries and repo backing supply, with monthly attestations from an independent accounting firm.
AUSD is a centralised, issuer-dependent asset. The issuer can freeze balances and upgrade the contract, so holders take operational risk on Agora as well as market risk. Attestations are not full audits and describe a point in time rather than continuous solvency. Reserve assets carry counterparty and custody risk even when short dated. AUSD is less liquid than the largest dollar stablecoins, which matters for exit in stressed markets. Balances are not bank deposits, and regulatory treatment continues to change by jurisdiction.
Stablecoin issuance is consolidating around a handful of large names, and competition is now mostly about distribution economics rather than the token itself. AUSD is a clear example of an issuer trying to win share by sharing reserve income and shipping mint and redeem plumbing as an API.
Institutional clients mint and redeem AUSD directly with Agora. Everyone else acquires it on centralised exchanges that list it or on decentralised exchanges and stable swap pools. Availability varies by venue, so check the live market data on this page.
On EVM chains, AUSD is held in any wallet such as MetaMask, Rabby or Trust Wallet using the published contract address. On Solana, use Phantom or Solflare with the published mint. Confirm you are sending on the correct chain, because the same address exists on many networks and a transfer to an unsupported chain can be unrecoverable. Hardware wallets are advisable for large balances.
