What Is Sentient (SENT)?

Sentient is an open-source AI project building a network where independently contributed agents, models, datasets and compute combine to answer a single request. That network is the GRID, reached through an interface called Sentient Chat. Sentient Labs builds the products and the Sentient Foundation acts as steward for research and governance. SENT is the Ethereum ERC-20 token used to stake on contributions, direct emissions and pay for services.

Who Founded Sentient? (History)

Sentient Labs was founded in January 2024 by Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon, Pramod Viswanath, an engineering professor at Princeton University, and Himanshu Tyagi, an engineering professor at the Indian Institute of Science. In July 2024 it announced an $85 million seed round co-led by Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, Pantera Capital and Framework Ventures. Technical work preceded the token: OML fingerprinting in 2024, the first Dobby models in early 2025, and the GRID in August 2025 with 110+ partners.

How Sentient Works

The GRID, short for Global Research and Intelligence Directory, is a routing layer rather than a single model. A query entering Sentient Chat is dispatched to the relevant agents, models and data sources, enriched with tools, then merged into one answer. Contributions are called artifacts. Attribution is economic: holders stake SENT on artifacts they value, more stake directs a larger share of emissions there, and distribution is further weighted by usage and revenue.

SENT Token Utility

SENT has a fixed total supply of 34,359,738,368 tokens, exactly 2 to the power of 35. Allocation is 44.0 percent community and airdrop, 22.0 percent team, 19.55 percent ecosystem and research, 12.45 percent investors and 2.0 percent public sale, with 2 percent annually flowing to a community emission pool. Documented uses are staking, which carries governance rights and artifact access, voting on emissions and upgrades, and paying for agent, model and data services. What Makes Sentient Unique?

Most decentralized AI projects pick one layer, usually compute or inference. Sentient assumes the useful unit is a composed answer drawn from many contributors, so the token targets routing and attribution rather than renting hardware. Fingerprinting is the second distinguishing piece, an attempt to keep an openly released model traceable to its owner.

How Sentient Differs from Similar Projects

Bittensor also pays contributors for machine intelligence, but ranks them by validator scoring inside subnets, while Sentient directs emissions through staked SENT and measured usage. Compute marketplaces such as Akash Network and Render sell raw capacity, while the GRID sells composed results. Agent launch platforms create individual agents; Sentient builds the layer deciding which agents to call.

How Sentient Is Secured

SENT is an ERC-20 token, so custody and transfer security come from Ethereum's proof-of-stake consensus rather than a separate chain. The AI layer relies on fingerprinting for provenance and on partners supplying verifiable compute. Fingerprinting proves origin after the fact. It does not prevent copying, and its strength depends on fingerprints staying secret.

Risks and Considerations

Sentient is early. The GRID, staking-directed emissions and paid agent services are young systems whose behavior under real economic pressure is undemonstrated. Team and investor allocations are a large share of supply and unlock over time. Emission mechanics are still evolving, so prefer current documentation.

Why Sentient Matters

For open-source AI to compete with closed labs, two problems must be solved that funding alone cannot: who gets paid when many contributors produce one answer, and how an openly released model stays attributable to its author. Sentient attacks both.

Storage Options After Purchase

SENT can be held in any Ethereum-compatible wallet, including hardware wallets such as Ledger or Trezor. Leaving tokens on an exchange is simpler but means you do not hold the keys. Before staking on GRID artifacts, verify contract addresses from official sources.
