Kaspa is a proof-of-work layer 1 that replaces the single chain with a blockDAG, so blocks mined at the same moment are ordered, not orphaned. Consensus uses GHOSTDAG, a generalization of Nakamoto consensus from the PHANTOM research line, which lets the network run fast without the security loss orphans cause. The wiki calls the design faithful to Bitcoin's principles: proof-of-work mining, UTXO state, deflationary issuance, no premine, no central governance.
Official resources:
Kaspa was founded by Yonatan Sompolinsky, whose earlier GHOST protocol is cited in the Ethereum whitepaper; the PHANTOM GHOSTDAG paper is co-authored with Shai Wyborski and Aviv Zohar. Mainnet launched November 7, 2021 with no premine, presale, ICO, or allocations. There is no company or foundation: the FAQ states that "Kaspa does not have paid positions" and that work is voluntary or donation-funded, with community votes approving grants such as the 100 million KAS node rewrite fund.
Rather than discarding parallel blocks, GHOSTDAG admits them into a directed acyclic graph and derives one agreed ordering, letting throughput rise without weakening the security assumption. The Crescendo hard fork of May 5, 2025 raised the block rate from one to ten per second, and mining uses kHeavyHash, a HeavyHash variant built on matrix multiplication between two keccak rounds.
Issuance ran a pre-deflationary phase at 500 KAS per second until May 8, 2022. The chromatic phase since then cuts the reward monthly by a factor of one half raised to the power of one twelfth, a smooth annual halving named for the semitones of a chromatic scale. Emission is set per second, not per block, so a change in block rate leaves the curve intact, and issuance is capped near 28.7 billion KAS.
KAS is a plain network coin. It pays transaction fees and rewards miners for producing blocks, with no staking, governance function, or fee sharing attached. Fees are tiny by design, at one sompi per gram of transaction mass, with a fee market only under congestion or KIP-9 rules.
Ten blocks per second under proof-of-work is the headline. Reaching that speed usually means switching to proof of stake or a committee, whereas Kaspa keeps open mining and closes the gap at the consensus layer. The chromatic halving is unusual too, smoothing a four-year cliff into a monthly step.
Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash keep a single chain and manage orphan risk with long gaps between blocks. Kaspa keeps their proof-of-work and UTXO model but drops the rule discarding parallel blocks, which is what buys the speed. Ethereum Classic and Ravencoin are proof-of-work too but do not rework consensus. The trade-off is a heavier node, since a fast blockDAG produces far more data.
Security comes from proof-of-work hashrate plus the GHOSTDAG ordering rule, which restores the honest-majority threshold a fast single chain would erode. The node is open source, pruning bounds storage, and SPV proofs let light clients verify without the full DAG. Consensus changes arrive as hard forks operators must adopt.
Having no company aids neutrality but weakens delivery, since no funded team must ship and roadmap items depend on volunteers and grants. Programmability is not on mainnet yet, so smart contracts remain a plan, not a product. Mining has been ASIC-dominated since mid-2023, and emission is heavily front-loaded, so miner revenue must shift toward fees sooner than on Bitcoin. Documentation lags too, with parts of the wiki still citing the pre-Crescendo block rate.
Kaspa is the largest live test of whether proof-of-work can scale by changing the consensus rule instead of abandoning mining. If the blockDAG holds up under load and programmability lands, it offers fast settlement without the validator sets most fast chains rely on.
KAS is listed on many centralized exchanges and can also be mined, which is how every unit was created. It is a native layer-1 coin, not a token on another chain, so withdrawals travel over the Kaspa network. Check that a venue supports on-chain withdrawal before buying.
The wiki lists Kaspa NG, successor to KDX and the old web wallet, for desktop and browser, Kaspium for mobile, and a command-line wallet for node operators. Hardware support is documented for Ledger, Tangem, and OneKey. Back up the recovery phrase before funding any wallet.
