OMG Network is an Ethereum scaling project, originally launched as OmiseGO, that built one of the first production attempts at a Plasma-based value transfer network for ETH and ERC-20 tokens. OMG is the ERC-20 token associated with that project, deployed on Ethereum at contract 0xd26114cd6ee289accf82350c8d8487fedb8a0c07 with 18 decimals.
Anyone researching OMG should know the most important fact up front: the network's original roadmap ended. The core team's work moved to Boba Network, an optimistic rollup, and BOBA was distributed to OMG holders. OmiseGO came out of Omise, a payments company founded in Bangkok in 2013 by Jun Hasegawa and Donnie Harinsut. The token sale ran in mid-2017 and raised roughly 25 million US dollars. Security in the original architecture rested on Ethereum plus user vigilance. The root chain contracts are the final arbiter of deposits and exits, so Ethereum's own security backstopped custody. Because the token itself is a standard ERC-20, holding and transferring OMG carries ordinary Ethereum smart contract and key management risk, independent of whether the child chain runs.
