Flare is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain built around data acquisition. Instead of leaving oracles and cross-chain verification to third parties, Flare enshrines them in the protocol, so the validator set that produces blocks also supplies price feeds and attests to external events. That underpins FAssets, which brings XRP, Bitcoin and Dogecoin onchain. FLR pays gas and is used for staking, delegation and governance.
Official resources:
Flare was founded in 2019, with published reporting attributing it to Hugo Philion, Sean Rowan and Naireen Kamil. The original whitepaper described a token called Spark and a plan to bring smart contracts to the XRP Ledger. Flare's documentation records network genesis on July 14, 2022 and the token distribution event on January 9, 2023. The monthly FlareDrop program under FIP.01 completed its 36-month schedule on January 30, 2026.
Flare runs Snowman++ consensus, derived from Avalanche, with proof of stake for Sybil resistance. Block proposers are weighted by total stake including delegations, blocks reach single-slot finality, and average block time is roughly 1.8 seconds.
Validators are also data providers. FTSOv2 delivers block-latency feeds that update every block using incremental deltas, plus anchor feeds that run a commit-and-reveal cycle over a 90-second epoch as the accuracy reference. Documentation states each feed has around 100 independent providers, and block-latency feeds are free to read onchain. The Flare Data Connector lets contracts request attestations about events on other chains or real-world APIs.
FLR pays transaction fees, and the developer documentation states those fees are burned. It can be staked to validators or wrapped into WFLR, the form used to delegate to FTSO data providers and vote on Flare Improvement Proposals. Delegation and staking both earn protocol rewards, and FLR also serves as collateral in FAssets. Under FIP.16, annual inflation was reduced to 3%.
The enshrinement decision is the whole argument. On most chains an oracle is an application with its own token, node set and failure modes, so anything depending on it inherits a security assumption it cannot audit from inside the chain. On Flare the oracle inherits the network's own economic security, and reading a feed at block latency costs nothing.
Chainlink and Pyth supply data to many chains as external networks, while Flare supplies data only to itself but does so as part of consensus. Other Layer 1s compete on throughput; Flare competes on the cost and cadence of data. FAssets also differ from custodial bridges, since agents post over-collateralized positions liquidators can seize when backing falls short.
Developers build applications that consume frequent price data, such as perpetual futures and lending markets, without per-query oracle costs. FAssets let XRP, Bitcoin and Dogecoin holders lend, borrow and trade while keeping exposure to the original asset. The Data Connector supports insurance and proof-of-payment.
Consensus security comes from proof of stake with stake-weighted block proposal and single-slot finality. The oracle layer is secured by the same validators and by rewards paid only when submissions track the anchor feed, which penalizes drift. In FAssets, agents must maintain a backing factor across mixed collateral, enforced by liquidators.
Enshrined oracles concentrate risk as well as security: a fault in feed logic affects everything built on it, with no independent oracle to fall back on. FAssets depend on agents staying collateralized and on liquidation working under stress, and the Core Vault adds a multisig-controlled component. With FlareDrops ended, distribution depends only on inflation and fees, and reward parameters can change.
The hardest unsolved problem in decentralized finance is not execution, it is getting reliable outside information onchain cheaply and often enough to be useful. Flare makes that a protocol responsibility rather than a service someone sells you.
FLR is listed on major centralized exchanges including Coinbase, Kraken, OKX, Bybit, KuCoin, Gate, MEXC, Crypto.com and Bitstamp, and on regional venues such as BtcTurk. Confirm your venue supports FLR withdrawals to the Flare network if you intend to stake or delegate.
FLR is held in wallets supporting the Flare network. Because the chain is EVM-compatible, standard Ethereum wallets can be configured with Flare's network details, and hardware wallets such as Ledger work for self-custody. Delegation and governance require WFLR while validator staking uses native FLR.
