Epic Chain is the current name of a project that began in 2021 as Ethernity Chain, a licensed-NFT platform, and EPIC is its ERC-20 token on Ethereum. The name carries some history that matters, because the project has changed what it does twice.
Under the Epic Chain name the project built an OP Stack Layer 2 aimed at bringing entertainment franchises and real-world assets on-chain. That is the meaning most third-party descriptions still repeat. As of 2026 the project's own website presents something different again: Epic is marketed as a travel booking product for crypto holders, offering hotels and flights sourced from wholesale suppliers, cashback paid in XRP, and a concierge tier gated on holding EPIC. The site states the company has raised more than 20 million dollars and lists backers including Ripple, Algorand, Polygon, Chainlink, Ceffu, and Brinks.
The Layer 2 appears to be behind it. L2BEAT lists the chain as archived and no longer maintained, and on 2026-09-11 the project's published RPC and explorer hostnames, rpc.epicchain.io and explorer.epicchain.io, did not resolve or accept a connection from an outside network. Anyone researching EPIC should treat "Epic Chain is a Layer 2" as a description of a past phase rather than of the product today.
Official sources:
The project launched in 2021 as Ethernity Chain, built around officially licensed NFT collectibles. Its own site still cites that work: collections with Shaquille O'Neal and Lionel Messi, digital asset work with Toys R Us, and an advisory engagement with the United States Space Force. Founder attribution for the original Ethernity team is not stated in the project's current materials, so it is not asserted here.
The rebrand is well documented. Following a DAO vote reported at roughly 97 percent approval, the ERN token was swapped for a new EPIC token at a stated one-to-one ratio, with the swap portal opening on 13 March 2025 and major exchanges completing conversions through that month. The project described the move as a shift from an NFT marketplace into a Layer 2 ecosystem for entertainment intellectual property and real-world assets. L2BEAT records an Ethernity permissioned mainnet from 29 October 2024, running on the OP Stack with ETH as the gas asset.
A live check of the old ERN contract on 2026-09-11 shows how that swap was actually executed. ERN at 0xBBc2AE13b23d715c30720F079fcd9B4a74093505 still reports a total supply of exactly 30,000,000, with roughly 22.52 million of those tokens sitting at the 0x000...dEaD address. In other words the "burn" of the old token was a transfer to an unspendable address, which removes tokens from circulation but does not reduce the recorded total supply, and roughly a quarter of the old ERN supply appears never to have been migrated.
In its current form Epic is a commerce product rather than a protocol, and most of it runs off-chain:
Inventory sourcing The site states that hotel and flight inventory is sourced from wholesale travel suppliers, which is how it claims pricing below public retail booking sites.
Payment and settlement Bookings can be paid in crypto, including EPIC, across a broad list of accepted assets. Settlement with suppliers happens in conventional currency, so the crypto leg is a payment rail rather than a change in how travel is contracted.
Token-linked benefits Cashback on bookings is paid in XRP, and a concierge service is described as available to holders above a stated EPIC balance threshold.
None of these steps requires a dedicated blockchain, which is consistent with the observation that the Layer 2 is no longer presented as part of the product.
EPIC's documented uses today are tied to the travel product: paying for bookings, earning cashback, and meeting a holding threshold that unlocks concierge access. These are commercial benefits granted by a company, not permissionless protocol rights, and they can be changed by the company without a token holder vote.
Supply mechanics, read directly from the contract on 2026-09-11 rather than from marketing material:
Two points follow from that. First, 33,600,000 is the current on-chain total, not a protocol-enforced ceiling; the governor can issue more. Second, that figure is 3,600,000 higher than the 30,000,000 total of the ERN token it replaced at a stated one-to-one ratio, and no explanation for the difference appears in the project's current public materials. State it as an open question rather than assuming either an error or an abuse.
Compared with a Layer 2 token such as OP or ARB, EPIC is not a network asset: no gas is paid in it, and its current value proposition is commercial. Compared with a real-world-asset protocol, Epic is not tokenizing an asset; it is selling a service and accepting tokens as payment. Compared with a conventional travel loyalty program, the difference is mainly that the membership tier is held as a transferable token instead of being recorded in a company database.
Security here has to be described honestly, because the answer differs by layer. The EPIC token is a plain, non-upgradeable ERC-20 secured by Ethereum consensus; its balances cannot be rewritten and its logic cannot be swapped out. What is not secured by code is everything else: the travel platform, the supplier relationships, the cashback program, and the concierge tier are all operated by a company and depend on that company continuing to operate them.
The archived Layer 2 was not trust-minimized either: L2BEAT records a centralized operator holding the sequencer and proposer roles and a 3-of-5 multisig controlling upgrades, and declined to classify the chain as a rollup because its proof system was not fully functional.
Epic is a case study in how far a crypto brand can travel from its origin. The same token has represented a celebrity NFT platform, an entertainment-focused Layer 2, and now a travel booking membership. The practical lesson is that a ticker and a name persist while the underlying business can be replaced entirely, so the only reliable way to know what a token is today is to read the contract and the project's current site rather than the descriptions that accumulated around it.

Confirm current listings before trading, since several exchanges handled the ERN to EPIC transition on their own schedules.
After purchase, EPIC can be held:
Verify the contract address is 0x94314a14df63779c99c0764a30e0cd22fa78fc0e before adding the token manually. Other assets use the EPIC ticker on unrelated networks, and the older ERN contract is still live on Ethereum, so matching the exact address matters more than matching the symbol.
