Bitget Wrapped BTC is an exchange-issued wrapped bitcoin token pegged one to one with BTC. Users obtain it by subscribing with bitcoin through Bitget and redeem it through the same channel. Bitget describes it as an interest-bearing asset that routes holders into onchain yield without requiring them to manage staking. It is an ERC-20 on Ethereum.

BGBTC is a Bitget product rather than an independent protocol, so no separate founding team is named in official documentation. Bitget was established in 2018 and is led by chief executive Gracy Chen, quoted in its announcements about the token.
It launched in December 2024 with a pre-launch staking phase, after which free conversion between BTC and BGBTC opened. In August 2025 Bitget adopted Chainlink Proof of Reserve on Ethereum and connected the token to BitVault Finance yield strategies. It listed for spot trading against USDT in April 2026, and a July 2026 upgrade added daily bitcoin-denominated rewards and CCIP.
The mechanism is custody plus tokenization. A user sends BTC through the subscription channel, Bitget holds it in reserve, and an equivalent amount of BGBTC is issued. Because the reserve sits with an exchange rather than a permissionless contract, the peg is an operational commitment backed by disclosed reserves.
The yield layer sits on top. Bitget deploys the pooled bitcoin into DeFi strategies and lending products, with its listing announcement describing BGBTC as letting users "automatically earn daily on-chain DeFi yields" while holding it. Bitget notes the locked BTC figure may differ slightly from the pegged amount because audit data is not real-time.
BGBTC carries no governance rights and no fee claim on Bitget. Its proposition is peg plus yield.
Most wrapped bitcoin designs are deliberately inert: they hold bitcoin, mint a receipt, and do nothing else, which keeps the risk surface small. BGBTC bundles the wrapper with an actively managed yield strategy and pays rewards in bitcoin, so a holder takes on strategy risk for a return a plain wrapper does not offer.
The main contrast is with the passive wrapped bitcoin model, where the token is a pure custodial receipt. Against bitcoin staking designs such as Babylon (BABY) and Lombard (BARD), the difference is where trust sits: those push custody and yield into protocol logic and validator sets, while BGBTC keeps both inside an exchange.
Bitget states reserves are jointly safeguarded with Cobo, a custody technology provider, using MPC wallets with multi-signature controls so no single party can unilaterally move funds. Chainlink Proof of Reserve publishes reserve data onchain, and Bitget cites its protection fund as a further backstop.
BGBTC is a clear example of exchanges packaging their own bitcoin wrappers with yield rather than leaving reserves idle, and a live test of whether oracle-based reserve verification is enough to make an exchange-issued instrument trustworthy at scale.
The primary route is Bitget, either by subscribing with BTC through the BGBTC channel or by trading the BGBTC to USDT spot pair listed in April 2026. As an ERC-20 it can also appear on Ethereum decentralized exchanges, though depth there is limited.
Holding on Bitget is simplest for anyone buying for the yield program, since rewards and collateral uses run through the exchange account. Withdrawing to a self-custodied Ethereum wallet, including Ledger or Trezor, removes exchange account risk but not issuer risk, since redemption still requires Bitget.
